Paradigmatic of baroque music, J. S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite no. 3 embodies the ABA format of music of this time period. The Orchestral Suite no. 3 begins with a strong and lively A part, almost regal in manner, and switches to an elegant B part only to return once again to the lively A part.

There are no known versions of them in Bach’s handwriting, and no way to tell for certain when they were originally written or why. They are not thought to have been written or compiled as a coherent set. Johann Sebastian Bach probably wrote his Suite for Orchestra No 3 in D major, BWV 1068 in 1731. This was not the sort of music he normally wrote; it is lighter fare than his normally more rigorous, sacred or fugal fare.

Containing his Air on a G string, Bach composed four orchestral suites, including his most famous offering, the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D, BWV 1068. Bach wrote a total of four orchestral suites, the best-known of these being the third. It was written, along with the others, during the last period of his life in Leipzig, around 1731.

Special notes This suite has been handed down to us in a version with wind instruments (oboes, trumpets and timpani). Scholars suspect that Bach added the wind parts later, meaning that there was an original version Bach, by contrast, has left us only four orchestral ouvertures, and we know remarkably little about them.
